Decorating my kitchen with sleeping beauty theme can you help?

I am decorating my kitchen with a vintage cottage “forest animals” theme. Think Sleeping Beauty’s cottage in the woods. I want it to have a kitschy, vintagey feel. For example I am collecting a few vintage owl cookie jars…anymore ideas?!

Red and white check curtains. Little ‘cafe’ style lace netcurtains (although can be a little chintzy).

Cream woodwork or keep it natural.

    Exposed beams on the ceiling.

That sounds adorable. At Christmas time you could buy a bunch of those tree shaped candles…..that would be cute. You have to have a bambie- you could make one out of felt- hand sewn. You can buy alot of nice hand carved forest figures as well as fine felt figures from Waldorf websites. Try Magic Cabin. I would also add pine cone items ie. candles, real pine cones and pine cone candles. You can get things like that at Smith and Hawken. I bought really nice pine cone garlands from Pottery Barn during the holiday. Also, use lots of ivy and potted plants and put fresh green moss around the lips of the pots. You can also buy gorgeous green moss that is dry but looks fresh from Smith and Hawken. Moss would really give it a foresty feel. How about white birch items…. like pots or lamps- you can buy white birch lamp shades and put them on two small lamps……There are alot of birch items ie. baskets, pen cups, etc that would be cute. Red and white cked mats and accents, as well as black and white cked items (I use Mckenzie Childs blk and white cked tin ware for accents) looks cute with that look. Have fun!

I have to warn you..though we all love themes..it is best to avoid getting caught up in theme rooms..reason being..it hurts your resale value of your home if the rooms are too personal. Now, if you never plan on selling your home, ever, go for it..but sticking to basics in kitchen design will have lasting power and few regrets down the road.
In the not so distant past, you may recall in the eighties “country blue” kitchens were all the rage..kitchens across the country were blue and had geese and cows and blue as far as the eye could see. Then there was a slow progression to Burgundy and hunter green…
As time goes by, you have to spend a lot of money updating because of getting caught in theme based decor.
If you have your heart set on themed decor, I would suggest it be in the way of moveable/removeably decor only. Avoid painting cabinets or walls in colors specific to the theme you are after..keep them warm, fresh and neutral. This will save you money later on..believe me..and no matter what theme decor you choose..upgrading your countertops, flooring and cabinets are all things that are certainly worth the money and will have true staying power in the world of decor, also ensuring you will not lose money on your investment should you sell.
Just keep the decor flexible. Enjoy your kitchen!!
